10 Phonics Tips That Help Preschoolers Read Faster
Simple, science-backed phonics tips parents can use at home to help preschoolers ages 3–5 build reading confidence — plus a free ABC video to sing along to.
Phonics is the foundation of confident reading. When kids ages 3–5 learn letter sounds through play — not drills — they build the connections that make early reading feel like a game, not a test.
Start with sounds, not letter names
The letter "B" is called "bee", but the sound it makes is "buh". Kids read using sounds. Focus on the sound first, and letter names will come naturally.
Sing the alphabet — every day
Songs are how tiny humans lock in patterns. Our ABC song is a great daily 3-minute ritual before storytime.
Use everyday objects
Point out the "sss" in "snake" at the zoo. The "mmm" in "milk" at breakfast. Real-world phonics sticks.
Blend two sounds at a time
Once your child knows a handful of sounds, start blending: "c-at", "m-om", "b-ig". Little wins build big confidence.
Celebrate every attempt
No pressure, no tests. Just cheers. Reading should feel like the safest place in the world.
