Simple Science Experiments for Kids at Home (No Special Kit)

Six easy science experiments for children using things already in your kitchen, plus the one question that turns any activity into real science thinking.

The short answer: science at home is not about volcanoes and kits. It is about asking "what do you think will happen?" before you do something, then finding out together. Everything below uses what is already in your kitchen.

The question that makes it science

Any activity becomes an experiment the moment you ask for a prediction. Guessing first makes children care about the result and gets them comfortable with being wrong, which is the actual skill. Afterwards ask "what surprised you?" and "what should we change next time?" — that is a fair test, in toddler form.

Six experiments with things you already own

1. Sink or float

A bowl of water and a tray of objects. Predict each one, then test it. Ask why the heavy wooden spoon floats and the tiny coin sinks — the surprise is the point.

2. Walking water

Two glasses, one with coloured water, joined by a folded strip of kitchen roll. Come back after an hour and the water has climbed across. Good for children who need a slow reveal.

3. Baking soda and vinegar

A spoon of bicarbonate of soda, a splash of vinegar, in a tray. Fizzing gas. Then vary it: more soda, warmer vinegar, a narrower cup. One change at a time.

4. Shadow drawing

Stand a toy on paper in the sun and draw round its shadow in the morning, then again at lunch and teatime. A whole day of noticing from three pencil lines.

5. Grow a bean in a jar

A dried bean, damp kitchen roll, a clear jar on the windowsill. Children see roots and shoots appear rather than being told about them. Ask which way the root grows before it happens.

6. The ice race

Identical ice cubes in different places — windowsill, fridge, a pocket, a bowl of salt. Which melts first, and why? This is the tidiest introduction to fair testing there is.

How to run these without it going sideways

  • Set up in a tray or the sink. Mess boundaries keep everyone cheerful.
  • Change one thing at a time. Otherwise nobody can say what caused what.
  • Let them do the pouring. Slow and spilled beats fast and watched.
  • Stop while it is still fun. Ten minutes is a full session for a small child.
  • Never say "wrong". Say "that is what we thought — let us see."

Following curiosity beyond the kitchen

Most young children’s science interest arrives through animals, weather and space rather than through chemistry.
