When Is My Child Ready to Learn Letters? 7 Signs to Watch For

The short answer: most children show readiness for letters between ages 2 and 4 — but it's about signs, not birthdays. When a child enjoys books, plays with rhymes, and notices letters around them, they're ready. Here are seven signs, and what to do when you spot them.

1. They love being read to

A child who brings you books and asks for "again!" is building the strongest foundation for reading: that books are joy.

2. They recognise letters in their own name

The first letter most children learn starts their name. "That's my letter!" means the door is open.

3. They enjoy rhymes and silly sounds

4. They "read" from memory

Reciting a familiar book word-for-word is a milestone: they've learned the marks carry meaning.

5. They ask what words say

Pointing at a sign and asking "what does that say?" is curiosity about print. Follow it.

Mark-making is early writing — the flip side of reading.

7. They have plenty of spoken words

Strong talking comes before strong reading.

What to do when they're ready
