A Parent's Guide to Counting
What counting actually covers
Counting is much more than reciting numbers in order. A child who can chant “one, two, three” is doing something different from a child who can touch five buttons and know there are five. That second skill — one-to-one correspondence, and understanding that the last number said is the total — is what early counting practice is really building. Our counting activities work through number recognition, counting objects, counting on from a number, and eventually skip counting in twos, fives and tens.
Why it matters
Counting is the doorway to every other maths topic. Addition is counting on, subtraction is counting back, and multiplication is counting in groups. Children who are comfortable moving up and down the number line tend to find later arithmetic far less stressful, because they always have a slower method to fall back on when they cannot recall a fact.
Signs of readiness and typical milestones
Children develop at their own pace — these are rough guides, not targets.
- Around ages 2–3: Joins in with counting songs and recognises a few written numerals, even if the order slips.
- Around ages 4–5: Counts a small group of objects accurately and says how many there are altogether without recounting.
- Around ages 6–8: Counts past 100, counts backwards from 20, and starts skip counting in twos, fives and tens.
Three things you can try away from the screen
Count real things, not just numbers
Stairs, forks on the table, cars of one colour on a walk. Touching each item as you say the number is the part that matters.
Ask “how many?” after counting
If your child recounts from one each time, they are still building the idea that the final number is the total. Keep asking gently — it clicks with repetition.
Play with wrong answers
Count a set deliberately wrong and let your child correct you. Catching an adult’s mistake is far more motivating than being tested.
